Choosing the Right Product
How do I know which unit is right for my room? A quick guide:
- Up to 20m² (small bedroom, home office) → 7,000–9,000 BTU
- 20–35m² (medium bedroom, living room) → 10,000–12,000 BTU
- 35–65m² (large living room, open plan) → 14,000 BTU+
If you're unsure, message us and we'll recommend the right unit for your space.
What's the difference between a portable air conditioner and an evaporative cooler? A portable air conditioner uses a refrigerant compressor to actively lower room temperature — it requires an exhaust hose vented through a window. An evaporative cooler uses water and a fan to produce cool air — no window or hose needed, but it works best in drier conditions and is more effective for personal cooling than whole-room cooling.
Do I need a window to use a portable air conditioner? Yes — portable air conditioners require an exhaust hose to vent hot air outside, usually through a window. All units come with a window kit that fits most standard UK sliding, sash, and casement windows with no drilling required. If you have no window access, an evaporative cooler or tower fan cooler is a better option.
Will it work in a rented property? Absolutely. None of our units require permanent installation or wall drilling. The window kits are fully removable and leave no marks, making them ideal for renters.
Installation & Setup
How difficult is it to set up? Most units are ready in under 10 minutes. Attach the exhaust hose, fit the window panel, plug in, and turn on. No tools, no engineer, no specialist knowledge needed.
What window types does the kit fit? The included window kits are designed to fit most standard UK sliding, sash, and casement windows. If you have an unusual window type, contact us before ordering and we'll advise.
Do I need an electrician? No. All units plug into a standard UK 3-pin socket (220–240V / 50Hz).
Using Your Unit
How much does it cost to run? Running costs vary by unit and usage. As a rough guide, a 9,000 BTU unit running at full power costs approximately £0.25–£0.35 per hour at current UK energy rates. Most units automatically reduce power consumption once the set temperature is reached, so real-world costs are typically lower.
My unit is making a loud noise — is this normal? Portable air conditioners produce some operational noise from the compressor. This is normal. If you notice an unusual rattling or vibrating noise, contact us — this may indicate a fault and we'll arrange a replacement.
How often do I need to drain the water tank? Most units feature a self-evaporating system that recycles condensate automatically, significantly reducing how often manual draining is needed. In high humidity conditions you may need to drain occasionally — your unit will display a 'Water Full' indicator when this is required.
Can I use it in a conservatory? Yes — conservatories are one of the most common use cases for our units. We recommend a higher BTU model (12,000 BTU+) for conservatories as they tend to heat up significantly in summer sun.
